Animals, Secrets, Lincoln, War, Benji, Terror, Border, Shameless, Prize, Gangster, Korean, Kung Fu, Shaolin and Liberty

Mill Creek Entertainment has really outdone itself with its newest batch of DVD releases.  In all the years I've been reviewing Mill Creek DVDs I have never seen so many DVDs released at once covering such a diverse range of subjects.

I love animals of all types.  Our family has two cats, two dogs and a Bearded Dragon.  We're fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood close to a creek and it's not uncommon to see raccoons, armadillos, possums, a huge variety of birds, squirrels and the occasional odd critter roaming the neighborhood.

For seven hours of pure animal entertainment be sure to pick up a copy of Mill Creek's new Animals Great and Small nature documentary collections that examine The Secret Life of Birds, Shark Divers and The Amazing World of Dinosaurs.  Living or extinct animals are fascinating as to their habits, instincts, habitats and the legends that follow them.

From the sublime and peaceful to the dark and dangerous comes the complete 65 episode series of the Secrets of War.  Learn about how bloody conflicts throughout history have radically changed the world.

Discover the real stories behind the military conspiracies and cover-ups that have shaped our world.  Narrated by the late Charlton Heston.

Abraham Lincoln was the President of the people.  His heart and soul ached for the nation, its hardships and the unrest and turbulence created by the Civil War.

Over 19 hours on seven discs profile the Great Emancipator from his early days to his untimely death after the Civil War.  Discover the man behind the myth in three thrilling documentaries.

Mention Lincoln and you must talk about The War, the Civil War documentary that examines the war between the states that nearly destroyed America.

Learn how America became divided, the plight of the slaves and the bloodiest war ever staged by the United States.  History comes alive as three Civil War documentaries closely examine America divided.

I'd mentioned that I love animals and one of the most beloved animals to ever star in a series of movies is Benji the lovable mutt with the heart of gold.

All four Benji movies come complete in this new collection from Mill Creek that bring Joe Camp's Benji to your living room.  Get ready for cute.

It doesn't take much to scare me and Mill Creek's new 8 Movie Collection: Terror Theater, promises to deprive me of sleep.

Look for Hostel, Hostel II, The Tattooist, The BTK Killer, Hollow Man, Hollow Man 2, Fortress 2 and The Harvest.  Anyway you slice it, Terror Theatre cuts to heart of horror.

There's been a lot of news lately about securing America's borders.  Learn just how hard such a task is in The Complete First Season of The Border where in a world divided by fear, they hold the line.

More than stopping illegal immigrants from entering the country, Customs Security must face off against terrorists, enemy agents, illegal drug operations and much more.  Special features include a cast and crew documentary and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

Leave it to the UK to come up with an award-winning comedy about a dysfunctional family that audiences love.  Seasons 1 & 2 of Shameless takes on the Gallaghers the most unapologetic, funny and off-the-wall families ever to grace the small screen.

It's about the money, oil and power in The Prize the 8-part TV mini-series that examines the rise of the oil empires in the United States and how the oil moguls shaped and sculpted the USA and its people to fit their own unique vision of America and the world.

The world is one big oil reserve and only the most ruthless, persistent and cunning businesses reap the prize.  It's the ultimate Hunger Games.

Another kind of empire decidedly less subtle is the Gangster Empire.  The 6-part series follows the saga, bloodshed, betrayal and big business of The Mob from its early days during the Prohibition to its evolution into the Godfather empire of crime we know of today.

One of my favorite TV series is M.A.S.H. set during the Korean War. It follows the exploits of the doctors and nurses of the 4077 Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.

I was born the year the Korean War ended and it has always held a fascination for me.
The Korean War 60th anniversary Commmorative Documentary Collection comes on three discs.

Beginning with genesis of the war the documentary looks at the United States involvement, how the United Nations bungled the process of peace and the ultimate end of the conflict that still has North and South Korea divided to this day.

Two movie collections that are sure to set the hearts a twitter of martial arts movie fans are the two 12 Movie Sets: Flying Fists of Kung Fu and Kickin' It Shaolin Style

Get ready to chop, throw, kick, flip, smash, smack, twist, turn, cut, slice and fight with fists flying in these two martial arts mixtures of mayhem that will leave you breathless.
What better way for kids to learn history than through cartoons?

And that's just what James and Sarah do as they travel back and time and explore The United States history in Liberty's Kids.

Molly Danger: Book One

Every once in a while a comic book comes along that takes the superhero genre to a whole new level.  Molly Danger: Book One is one of those books.

Molly is a super strong, fast and nearly invulnerable girl who fights Supermechs in Coopersville, New York.

Although she looks like a young teenage human girl she is actually an alien who survived a crash on Earth.

Molly hates being different and wants nothing more than to be a normal human being.  She craves companionship and misses her family terribly.

Part of the powerful crime fighting organization D.A.R.T. Molly is forbidden to associate with or fraternize with humans.  D.A.R.T. officials believe she is too dangerous and may hurt of kill humans accidentally.

When her new pilot arrives (Austin Briggs) she senses a kindred spirit.  Ignoring D.A.R.T protocol Austin befriends Molly and even brings her to his home to meet his family.  Big mistake!

All good intentions aside, Austin has set in motion events that threaten the lives of all he and Molly hold dear.  Meanwhile sinister forces are at work as orchestrated by the mysterious Father.

Molly Danger is a delightful new series that instantly draws the reader into Molly's world.  Writer/artist Jamal Igle has done an outstanding job both artistically and as a writer.

I predict that Molly Danger will become a fan favorite and that bright things are in store for this enjoyable new title from Action Lab Entertainment.

Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox

Adapted to animated film from the DC Comics Flashpoint mini-series, Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox introduces an entirely different DC Universe than seen in the comic books.

In the Flashpoint Universe, Bruce Wayne's father didn't get killed, he did and his father is Batman.  Superman is a captured alien deprived from the life-giving yellow rays of the sun, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are two former lovers now waging a war between Atlantis and Paradise island that threatens to destroy the world, the Justice League does not exist and the Flash is deprived of his speed.

How did this all come about?  Blame the Flash.  A simple change he made in his timeline completely altered Earth's timeline resulting in Armageddon.

When Barry Allen wakes up at his desk he is unaware of any changes-until he tries to run like the Flash.  Suddenly he finds himself caught up in an entirely new world and it's up to him to set things right-no matter the cost.

The new DVD from Warner Bros. Animation features one of the most powerful lime travel stories ever created and it is sure to catch DC Comic fans by surprise.  Dynamically animated and expertly written and recorded by voice actors it deserves a prominent place in any DC Comics or comic book fan's DVD library.

Also included on the DVD is a sneak peek at the upcoming Justice League: War animated feature film.

Hamer Guitars and Electrifying The Wristwatch

It's times like this that I wish my son was still living at home.  He's a musician specializing in playing guitar-acoustic and electric.

I could use his expertise when it comes to guitars and music.  I can't even play a radio, let alone music and especially playing music on a guitar.

But...as an artist and designer I can appreciate the beauty of a fine guitar and the craftsmanship that goes into making one.  And..I can appreciate the time and effort it takes to write about classic guitars and the knowledge it takes to pull off such a task.

That's why I'm so impressed by Steve Matthes' and Joe Moffett's new hardbound book from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.: The Ultimate: An Illustrated History of Hamer Guitars.

I don't know jack about guitars but after looking through this impressive book with full-color photos, advertising pieces, concert posters and full historical descriptions of various types of Hamer Guitars, I feel as if the inner guitar player in me has started to surface.

Now where do I place my fingers?  What do you mean I need to learn chords and read music?  Maybe this will be a little harder than I thought.

I remember my first electronic wristwatch.  It was a funky little digital display watch (a Timex I think) that flashed the time (and only the time) and was impossible to read unless in full light.  Which made it a real pain trying to tell time at night.

Later I would purchase another wristwatch only this one counted not only the minutes, but seconds, showed the month and day and (ta-da!) was lit so I could see it in the dark.

During that time (the early 1970s) I also had a digital display clock by my bed and a small portable alarm clock.  It wasn't until the mid to late 1980s that I purchased my first electrified quartz wristwatch with actual hands instead of a digital display.

Why am I writing all this?  Schiffer Publishing Ltd. and authors Lucien F. Trueb, Gunther Ramm and Peter Wenzig have just released Electrifying The Wristwatch; a massive hardbound book.

I never realized the history behind such a simple device.  Literally dozens of companies
developed their own unique take on the wristwatch (digital or electric) and after decades, slowly but surely, standards began to develop until we have the electric wristwatch loved by millions today.

Brimming with photos, of not only the watches but their inner workings, the book offers an exhaustive history of the development of the electric wristwatch, its innovators and inventors and the various types developed.

Take the 'time' to read this book.  It's 'electrifying' and well worth the 'watch'.

Draw! #25, Summer

As an aspiring, wish I coulda been a comic book artist when I was younger, kind a guy, I love looking at the art of professional comic book artists, especially art from the Silver and Bronze Ages.

Of course I love the new art seen today, since it is so sophisticated.  I wish I could afford original art but with my original art budget (I have none) I have to settle for photos and reproductions.

Fortunately for me, and other comic book art lovers, TwoMorrows Publishing publishes Draw! magazine that keeps our comic book art addiction satisfied.

Just look what Draw! has to offer this summer in issue #25.  Yowza!

Number Cross Puzzles

Numbers confuse me.  I'm lucky I can remember my phone number and address and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Ask me to do any higher math problems and all you'll get from me is a blank stare.  Numbers intimidate me.

When I heard about Rich Rollo's new Number Cross Puzzles from Xlibris I was intrigued.  Why?  I have no idea.  I usually shy away from anything that involves numbers.

I can only guess that Rich's description of the book caught my attention.  "A quick and challenging workout for your brain", is what it read.

Lord knows my brain can use a workout.  I'm 60 years old and like my body, my brain needs the exercise.

Flipping through its pages it occurred to me that the book is not so much about numbers but about problem solving.  One of the big things stressed in schools today is 'higher learning skills'.

I should know, I'm a teacher.  I'm always stressing to my students to push their cognitive skills, to think outside the box and challenge their brains.

Number Cross Puzzles does just that.  I plan on using some of the exercises in my class and to share the book with other educators.  What an excellent resource to teach young people to use logic and solve strategies.

Weedy Seadragon and Atlantic Flying Fish

Safari Ltd. sails the Seven Seas to bring you its latest aquatic pieces of miniature art with two new sea creatures that look so real they practically shed water.

First up  is the exotic Weedy Seadragon with its long snout, wing-like fins and serpentine tail.
Its large orange/red eyes complement its tan, yellow and deep brown torso while aqua blue strips decorate it sides and aqua polka dots accent its snout.

Expertly crafted and detail the Weedy Seadragon appears almost iridescent.

Just as beautiful is the translucent 'winged' AtlanticFlying Fish with its silver tinged metallic blue scales, white underbelly and large black accented eyes.

With its fin/wings trimmed in black and its tail fins slightly twisted the Flying Fish looks likes its...flying.

Check out the details on its scales, wings and face.

Both figures are nicely sculpted with no flashing, feature top-rate paint application and look almost as real as the actual creatures.

Sulley SDCC

Vinyl figures are all the rage.  Over the past ten years the popularity of fully-molded and partially articulated figures has mushroomed.

More often than not the figures are cutified versions of the animated, literary or movie figures they are fashioned after.

POP! Disney recognized a good thing when they saw it and vinyl figures are big sellers in Disney retail stores and other stores that carry Disney products.

The latest POP! Disney vinyl figure release showcases the characters from the Pixar/Disney film Monster University.

Three figures make up the Super-Stylized Vinyl Figures designed and created by FUNKO.
Recently at the prestigious San Diego Comic Con, held in California, a limited edition version of Sulley was on sale exclusively at the convention.

The partially articulated figure (its head moves) Sulley figure looks similar in appearance to the general release figure except for the SDCC figure is painted in metallic colors.

The twin-horn monster features black button eyes, oversize eyebrows, a small green nose, no mouth, a lavender polka dot on blue body and a metallic lime green college jersey decorated with lemon yellow school letters outlined in black. A short ridged tail pokes out from behind the figure.

The figure comes packaged in a small rectangular box with a clear panel front, a SDCC sticker, a Monster University logo, and illustration of the figure decorates all sides of the box along with small illustrations of other figures in the set.

Did I mention he's so darn cute!

Abrams M1A1 Tank and '90 Mustang LX 5.0

The Ford Mustang has always been a big favorite of car enthusiasts.  While managing to retain the 'Mustang feel' the car has changed body style, size and look over the decades since it was first introduced.

Originally a sporty mini-muscle, pony car the Mustang grew up with its original purchasers.
From sports to midsize to luxury sedan the Mustang has grown from a pony to a full stallion.

In  1990 Mustang took on one its most unusual appearances transforming from a mini-pony car to a mid-size sedan the looked very little like its original configuration.

Appearance aside the Mustang became a police department favorite-mostly because of its non-descript appearance and powerful engine and dependabililty.

Revell Models has just released a new 2' n 1 model that showcases the '90 Mustang LX 5.0 as a two-door, baby blue sedan and a black and white, two-door Highway Patrol cruiser.

Requiring a Level 3 model-making skill level the 1:25 Scale two-car plastic model kit is also a Special Edition guaranteed to make it a much sought after collectible.

As part of Ford's 'Fox' platform Mustang series the LX 5.0 offered mucho horsepower for the dinero, without the high sticker price.

Powered by a V-8 engine, the LX 5.0 is a lot of Mustang muscle without all the frills.
The 2' n 1 model allows modelers to dress the kit out as street sedan with full interior and exterior details, a hood that opens to reveal an impressive engine, a uniform body style, chrome hubcaps, minimal trim and body molded lights.

The State Trooper configuration includes a Police light bar, a modified shock system, full decals and much more.  Either way you choose t configure you LX 5.0 is sure to please.  Parts detach easily from part trees, glue, decal and assembly instructions make assembling the model easy and best of all once completed the model looks great.

For the novice modeler comes the Snap Tite, Level 1, 1:25 Scale Abrams M1A1 Tank that recreates the powerful military tank in stunning full detail.

Parts simply 'snap' together, no paint is required and modelers have a fully-functional tank on treads with swivel ordnance and military model that rivals any authentic militarily model ever produced.

Ready, aim and fire-with this model, you can't miss.

Doctor Who The Complete Guide

I'm a huge fan of the Doctor Who TV series from the BBC.  The new Doctors (since #9) have all been awesome and the scripts never fail to delight and thrill.

As any Doctor Who fan will tell you this is the 50th Anniversary of the longest running science fiction show (or any TV show for that matter).

I first ran into the Doctor back in the 1970s when Tom Baker played the slightly befuddled and somewhat childish, scarf-wearing time traveler.

I had seen a few of the previous Doctor episodes and several after Tom left the series but it wasn't until the new relaunch of the series that I became a faithful viewer.

Still, there was an empty aching in the pit of my stomach.  I wanted to know more of the Doctor, his origin, his past adventures and where he had traveled and with who.

To be sure the information can be found on the web and in print but never in one place-until now.
Author Mark Campbell and Running Press have compiled the perfect 'catch-up on) guide for any new Doctor Who fan.

Doctor Who The Complete Guide gives a season-by-season breakdown of every episode including stories, cast, crew and more in short, concise descriptions that don't bog down the reader with heavy and ponderous exposition.

It's the perfect guide to the Doctor including audio, book, spin-offs, and missing episodes.

Batman '66 #1

Back in 1966 the ABC Network premiered a new TV show that immediately sparked my interest.  I was 13 years old, had been reading and collecting comic books since I was five and I especially liked the Batman comic book from DC Comics.

Although I primarily read Marvel Comics titles, several DC titles were still a part of my reading stable.  While Marvel Comics tended to be more 'mature', DC Comics held a certain spark of fun in them laced with tongue-in-cheek.

Curious I tuned into the first episode of Batman and I was immediately hooked.  What 13 year old boy wouldn't have been?  Batman, Robin, the Batcave, the Batmobile, a cool Rogues Gallery of villains and lots of Biff! Bang! Pow!, what a combination.

DC Comics, in a fit of nostalgia, has released a brand new comic book series based on the Batman TV series and they hit the nail right on the head!  I thought I was reading an episode of the TV series.

The art matched the look of the show right down to the bright colors, tacky sound effects and over-the-top costumes and locations.

Writer Jeff parker and artist/colorist Jonathan Case have done a spectacular job of translating the Batman TV series to the printed page with a simplistic plot, cliché riddled dialogue and predictable ending, and that suites me just fine.

I feel like I'm 13 again. How can you go wring with both the Riddler and Catwoman in the first issue?!  "Riddle me this.  What's bright, old but new and carries the same moniker as a famous highway?"  You guessed it-Batman '66.  "Holy nostalgia Batman!"

Pacific Rim and Turbo

If you love giant robots.  If you love giant monsters.  If you love death, destruction on a huge scale and spectacular visual special effects.  Then you're sure to love the new Pacific Rim movie.

I just got back from watching the movie and I was blown away by the entire experience.  Pacific Rim is like the giant monster movies made in Japan-on steroids!  Watch it!  Love it!

To discover how it was possible to make such a visually spectacular story translated to film be sure to pick up a copy of Insight Editions new Pacific Rim: Man, Machines & Monsters written by David S. Cohen.

Pages are packed with the inner workings of the epic film.  Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

First, let's talk about the book itself.  The oversize hardbound book grabs your attention immediately with its spot varnished cover image of a giant robot holding a ship in one hand about to clobber a huge monster as they face down on a city street.

A back cover image shows the facility for housing the huge robots.  Then on to the inside of the book---WOW!

Page after page are filled with production sketches, paintings, set designs, costume designs, behind-the-scenes production photos, cast photos, robot schematics, set pieces and special tabbed-in inserts with some pretty cool extras.

Throw in cast and crew interviews, technical information, production notes and a Foreword by the film's director Guillermo Del Toro and you have a book practically as big as the monsters and robots themselves!

Have you ever had the need for speed?  I'm not talking about the drug, I'm referring to going really fast.  Who hasn't wanted to run fast, zip by others as if they are standing still or careen around traffic, obstacles and anything else that bars your way?

What if you were a snail?  Talk about frustrating!  That's the premise behind the new Turbo movie from DreamWorks Animation.

A snail has big dreams of speed.  When he is sucked into the fuel chamber of a racing car something remarkable happens.  All of a sudden he's the fastest thing on two feet (uh, a slimy underbelly).

The Art Of Turbo written by Robert Abele with a Foreword by Ryan Reynolds and a Preface from David Soren takes readers on a fast and furious joyride behind the inner workings of the computer animated speed fest.

You'll see character sketches and drawings, background renderings, vehicle designs and more plus tons of info on how the film was put together and read conversations with cast and production staff all wrapped up in a hardbound book bulging with full-color art and photos.

So hurry!  Race out to your closest bookstore, website or retail outlet and buy this book!  It's sure to go fast!
